Return to ARS Software page Return to ARS Software page We'll discuss Storekares compatibility on 4 levels.
  • Hardware and Operating Systems
  • Devices
  • Networking
  • Third party software applications

1. Hardware and Operating System Compatibility

StoreKare® is designed to operate in an "open architecture" environment.  This means it works on ordinary, industry standard PC type computers rather then proprietary hardware which is usually more expensive to purchase and to maintain.  The minimum hardware requirements are a PC compatible computer with a 486 processor or better, 4 megabytes or more of RAM and at least 100 megabytes of free hard disk space. Different Operating Systems may require even a higher minimum levels of hardware.  This good news means Automated Retail Systems may be able to incorporate hardware which you already own into your new POS system, making your bottom line even more attractive!

      * POS TERMINAL (cash register): While it is possible to utilize a regular PC as your "cash register" by adding devices such as a cash drawer, etc.,  Automated Retail Systems recommends a PC designed specifically for POS purposes.   The high demands placed on hardware in a retail environment are beyond ordinary PC hardware design specifications.

       I have a question.

2. Device Compatibility

Devices are hardware items which attach to your POS terminal or Workstation.  Special software, or device drivers, are usually required for your computer to recognize and communicate with the device.  StoreKare® includes drivers for a very large variety of devices designed specifically for retail Point of Sale.  Below is a listing of some of the devices.   (NOTE: Each device may be manufactured by a number of different manufactures, StoreKare® may not support ALL the different manufactures for a particular device.  Your StoreKare® professional can discuss these matters with you if you have any questions.)

    • Cash Drawers (up to 2 per terminal)
    • Receipt Printers with Check Frank(impact)
    • Receipt Printers (Thermal)
    • Customer Pole Display
    • Bar Code Scanners
    • Magnetic Card Swipes
    • PIN Pads
    • Bar Code Printers (Serial or Parallel)
    • Report Printers
    • Portable Date Terminals (PDT)
    • Electronic Scales
    • more.....

       I have a question.

3. Network Compatibility

Networking is at the heart of StoreKare®.  In store settings where only one terminal is needed, networking is not an issue, however, when you begin to add more terminals and workstations to your system, networking becomes an essential factor.  StoreKare® can operate under any one of the following popular network protocols:

      • Microsoft, NetBEUI
      • Artisoft, Lantastic
      • Novell, Netware
For multiple store retail chain situations, StoreKare® has developed a system for "polling" each store at preset times and automatically transfers and updates information between stores an the "Home Office" over normal telephone lines.

   I have a question.

4. Third Party Software Applications Compatibility

This is probably your main compatibility concern.   Will StoreKare® integrate with my existing software applications?   The answer is both yes and no.   While StoreKare® is a complete solution within itself, SK Technologies has recognized the need for some of their customers to interact with the information accumulated within StoreKare® using other specialized software applications such as accounting packages, spreadsheet programs, and special report writers, to name a few.   As a response to this need, SK Technologies has provided two methods by which other software programs can interact with the information accumulated within the StoreKare® application.  Automated Retail Systems believes it will be time well spent to read the following regarding the nature of POS software for a better understanding of the level of interaction you can expect between your software and StoreKare®.

StoreKare®, as almost every POS software package, is an application written around a "Relational Database" at its core.   While "Flat Databases" store static information, "Relational Databases" are dynamic and are comprised of a series of "Tables" which interact amongst themselves in a particular pre-defined manner and sequence.

These interactivities and intercalations, include updating and transferring information between the various tables at critical stages of your informations processing.   It becomes imperative that the correct information is where is should be at the appropriate time.   Therefore, the ability to alter any information within your POS system by way of a third party application could cause serious loss of critical information or even irretrievable destruction of your entire POS application. At the least, the integrity of your data would become questionable.

As mentioned earlier, SK Technologies has developed two methods by which you can safely access the information accumulated in StoreKare®.

1.   32 bit ODBC Interface for Windows Module
  • Easy to use:   This is an extremely easy method to access the information within any table inside your StoreKare® POS system.  By using the ODBC (Open Data Base Connectivity) interface, you'll be able to seemlessly access StoreKare® tables using programs such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Corel Paradox, Fox Pro, Crystal Reports and many more...   essentially, any Windows program which supports the ODBC standard can access StoreKare® information.

  • Compatible:   The StoreKare® ODBC interface supports core and level 1 functions of the ODBC standard, with level 2 support for SQLDataSources and SQLMoreResults.  This meets or exceeds the needs of most popular ODBC compliant applications.

  • Non-Destructive:   Using the StoreKare® ODBC interface is safe and will not allow information within your StoreKare® application to be altered. [Example: Lets presume you have extracted information from StoreKares Inventory table into your Microsoft Excel spreadsheet program. It is possible for you to delete, cut and paste, move or what ever else you may wish to do with the information once it's inside your spreadsheet... you can even save it under a different name and you will not effected the data within your StoreKare® application.]

       I have a question.

2.   StoreKare® Third Party Interface Module
  • Recommended:   The Storekare® Third Party Interface module is the most popular method for extracting information from your StoreKare® application and Automated Retail Systems recommends this module for every customer, even if they purchase the ODBC Interface module for use with Windows based programs described above.

  • Industry Standard ASCII deliminated file format for both Import and Export:   This module is the only method by which data can be imported into StoreKare®.  It supports industry standard ASCII file format and will also export data out of StoreKare® in ASCII format.  Importing data into StoreKare® is not recommended by anyone other than a StoreKare® Professional, for reasons outlined above, but exporting ASCII formatted files is an easy method to interface StoreKare® with other applications.

  • Can be Batched:   ASCII formatted files can be exported from any table within StoreKare® as a batch function of StoreKares "End of Day" process.  These file can be imported into programs such as accounting applications, spreadsheet applications and so on.

       I have a question.
